Grants In Action: Fairview Intermediate School

Fairview 5th Graders Turn Food Scraps into Learning with Vermicomposting Project

Fairview Intermediate School 5th grade students dove into the world of vermicomposting—a natural process where worms break down food scraps into nutrient‑rich compost that helps replenish soil and reduce waste - thanks to the Educator Innovation Grant proposed by teachers, Leah Williams and Beth Harman. Students learned how this tiny-but-mighty system benefits the planet and practiced real-world sustainability by sorting their cafeteria waste.
Even better, students took the lead in installing and maintaining the vermicompost bins, turning knowledge into hands-on action. For the students, the project supercharged classroom learning by deepening discussions about decomposition, ecosystems, and the interconnectedness of living things.
🌟 A fantastic blend of environmental stewardship, STEM learning, and student empowerment—supported in part by the West Shore Foundation!
